In 1976, a small team of Volkswagen engineers in Wolfsburg quietly slipped a fuel-injected engine into a humble Golf hatchback. They called it the Sport GTI. What began as an internal skunkworks project would go on to define an entire category — the hot hatch.
Forty-eight years and seven generations later, the GTI is still engineered in Wolfsburg, still assembled with German precision, and still unmistakably itself: a tartan-clad cabin, a red-stitched wheel, and a turbocharged 2.0 TSI that delivers 180 kW to the front wheels through a 7-speed DSG.
